Hi, I'm Caryl, co-founder of Shell on Earth. I launched this company along with my husband, Jordan, in 2019. Our desire was to recycle the shells generated at our family's seafood processing business, rather than sending them to landfill.
We’ve been processing shellfish here on the West coast of Wales for over 40 years. We currently specialise in processing whelks.
The whelks are caught locally in traditional pots, a low impact method of fishing which means minimal damage to the sea floor and marine habitats. We’re passionately committed to sustainability and are always looking for new ways to do better.
It's estimated that 5,000 tonnes of waste shells are generated in the UK fishing industry every year. We’re proud to not only reduce our waste output from the factory, but also to help support a circular economy by utilising 100% of the whelks we process.

Our business is located in the heart of Cardigan Bay which is classed as a special area of conservation (SAC) due to the rich marine wildlife found here.
The seafood processing & export side of the business was founded by Jordan’s late grandfather. In the 90’s, Jordan’s parents helped to develop an emerging market for whelks in Asia, and the Welsh whelk made its way into the bars and restaurants of South Korea. Currently in its third generation, we now specialise in processing whelks, which are caught locally using traditional pots.
We launched Shell on Earth in order to recycle the natural and beautiful shells that are generated by our factory.
The shells can be used in a variety of ways including;
-Plant pot and terrarium dressing
-Garden borders and beds
-Drainage layer to aid runoff
-Surface mulch to retain moisture
-Natural, gentle weed and pest control
