Description

‘Two For Joy’ features two paper magpie sculptures, perched on a wreath adorned with hydrangea blooms. The flowers are various shades of purple, lilac, and warm pink tones.

This whimsical wall art is the only one of its kind (just like all of my sculptures).

The magpies have black and white feathers, which have a shimmery quality. Certain areas have a green, blue or purple hue, where more coloured metallic powders have been added to the inks to colour the paper. Their feathers are cut out by hand and individually applied, making each bird unique.

Magpies are associated with magic and prophecy. They represent good and bad, black and white, a duality of many things. I mostly like them because they are known to be collectors, easily distracted and enamoured by shiny things! There’s something very endearing about that.

Singular magpies can be made available, but joy is an emotion I hope to evoke in my designs, so Two For Joy was hard to resist!

Magpies have themselves a bit of a bad reputation, but I am utterly enamoured by them. The way they hop along the grass, their beautiful iridescent hues, the way their tails bob up and down…they’re the perfect blend of elegance and adorable. You might notice from the photographs that the pair are not identical. They have shimmery feathers of different hues in different places. (One has a bluer sheen to his neck, while the other has a green hue etc) They are made with the same screen printing papers so they are a matching set.

Need to know

This piece measures 56 cm (22 inches) tall and 50 cm (20 inches) wide. Each magpie is 35 cm (14 inches) from beak to tail tip.

It hangs via a steel hook, which suspends the piece using invisible fishing line.

Made with handprinted papers, from 300 gsm recycled card stock.

Varnished with a UV protective layer, making them easy to care for- all they need is a tickle with a feather duster every now and then.

Welcome to the paper sculpture menagerie. My name is Kate and I make handmade paper sculptures to bring cheer to your décor. Every one of my pieces is one of a kind, made from recycled 300 gsm paper (really sturdy cardstock). Each design is tested for durability, and they are varnished with a UV protective lacquer to seal their edges and protect their vibrant colours. Each sculpture is designed, individually printed, cut, assembled and embellished entirely by hand to make sure each and every one has its own unique character. Birds are my most favourite subject. I also make flowers and other wildlife. I am inspired by countryside walks and garden visitors. I often describe myself as a seasonal maker, as I can often be found at my desk making cosy pieces in the autumn and bright, cheerful blooms in the summertime. I’ve been making my sculptures for over 15 years now, and my work aims to evoke the joy I find in the great outdoors. I do hope they make you smile.
